What is LiveWell Dorset?
LiveWell Dorset is commissioned by Public Health Dorset, in partnership with Bournemouth Borough Council, Borough of Poole, and Dorset County Council, to provide their adult residents with free health and wellbeing information, as well as advice and support, in one or more of the following ways:
- Stop Smoking
- Alcohol Reduction
- Weight Management
- Move More
Their aim is to help prevent people from developing health issues by tackling the cause. People can self-register with them to receive free help.
Stop Smoking – Cut down or stop smoking
LiveWell Dorset will find the best methods to help you to cut down or stop smoking and support you through your journey to quitting for good. They work with you to assess your readiness to stop smoking, or help you to reduce the number of cigarettes you smoke and start thinking about setting a date for quitting.
They can provide information on the nearest pharmacies and GP Practices available to you, who run 12 week programmes of treatment and support. Livewell Dorset’s specialist Wellness Coaches will provide you with support through your 12 week programmes, if this is something that you feel you would benefit from.
Weight Management – get to and maintain a healthy weight
A Wellbeing Advisor will assess your BMI and discuss which programme of support might best work for you to lose weight; help you access a range of slimming clubs; offer one-to-one support from a Wellness Coach, as well as provide lots of tips and nutritional advice.
Drink Less – Reduce your alcohol intake
Are you drinking too much? LiveWell Dorset can assess, support and help you cut down; providing you with simple advice and support on how to drink less. They can determine if your alcohol consumption may be harmful and then recommend a way forward specific to your needs and lifestyle.
They will work with you to set goals and provide handy hints and tips, as well as regular support to make sure you are achieving them. Providing one-to-one coaching and if required, refer you to a specialised unit equipped to dealing with your needs.
Move More – Become more physically active
If you would like to benefit from being more physically active and don’t know where to start or what to do, LiveWell Dorset can assess your activity levels and provide you with information about local opportunities like walking groups; or provide you with a referral to an exercise scheme or gym. This may include free use of a gym for up to 12 weeks, to help you assess your longer term activity regime.
You start by setting some small goals and working towards achieving the recommended levels of activity – there is something for everyone!
LiveWell Dorset also provides information through NHS Choices.
